The Mawson Road Community Orchestra is, as far as we know, unique amongst community orchestras. It is open to all comers, run by its members, and creates parts for a full range of players (from beginners to advanced).

The orchestra was founded by Michael Copley as part Jubilee celebrations in 2012 – in Mawson Road – Michael’s home street. Such was the success of the initial concert (filmed by the BBC) and the fun that everyone had doing it, the group stayed together and have since grown to over 40-strong and performed at a number of events including the opening of Cambridge Summer Music Festival.

The orchestra play a range of music – Balkan, Baroque, Renaissance, Brazilian, Romanian, Peruvian – you name it - all in its own inimitable style. The orchestra consists of children and adults who play all the string instruments, Trumpet, Percussion, Accordion, Melodica, Clarinets, Bassoon, Double Bass, Ukulele, Flutes, Auto Harp, and Guitar to name but a few.

Come along and exercise your vocal chords for an unbeatable stress-busting, confidence-building, life-enhancing community programme with friends and family from all walks of life.  Led by experienced choral leaders, there is a wide range of musical styles on offer throughout the year and no experience or ability to read music is necessary. We look forward to meeting you and your friends, families, neighbours, & colleagues soon!

At present the choir is singing largely jazz under the direction of London Vocal Project’s Andi Hopgood. They sing in CMT concerts and have featured in the last two Cambridge Jazz festivals.

The choir also sings with the Mawson Road Orchestra and sings in non-Jazz concerts – notably in the annual Scratch Messiah.
